French Horn

French Horn

The French horn is a brass instrument made of tubing wrapped into a coil with a flared bell. The pitch is controlled through the adjustment of lip tension in the mouthpiece and the operation of valves by the left hand, which route the air into extra tubing. Most horns have lever-operated rotary valves.

When buying or renting a french horn, it might seem that almost any french horn will work for a beginner, but that is not always true. It’s very important to start with a high quality instrument as the first few months are often the most critical and difficult. An instrument that won't play properly will become a huge discouragement and source of frustration for a beginner.

This does not mean a beginner needs the finest or most expensive french horn, but they do need one that responds freely and plays in tune with the other instruments in the band. Typically a beginner starts on a single french horn which plays in the key of F. A more advanced player will move to a double horn, which plays in both F & Bb.

Shuff’s Music carries both types of french horns in high quality brands like Conn, Holton, Jupiter, Eastman, and others. Click the link below to get started with your french horn rental.
