The trombone is in the brass family. Like all brass instruments, sound is produced when the player’s vibrating lips “buzz” and cause the air column inside the instrument to vibrate. Nearly all trombones have a telescoping slide mechanism that varies the length of the instrument to change the pitch.

The trombone typically plays a harmony part or counter melody. It is popular in the concert band, orchestra, jazz, and even rock bands.

When renting or buying a trombone, it might seem that almost any trombone will work for a beginner, but that is not always true. It’s very important to start with a high quality instrument as the first few months are often the most critical and difficult for any student. An instrument that won't play properly will become a huge discouragement and source of frustration for any beginner.

This does not mean a beginner has to have the finest or most expensive trombone, but they do need one that responds freely, has a freely moving slide, plays in tune with the other instruments in the band, and can be repaired and adjusted as needed.

If you are not a beginner, you may want a more advanced instrument. A more advanced trombone will usually have an F attachment (or trigger), making it easier to play certain notes, a larger bore size, and may have a rose brass bell.
