The clarinet is a member of the woodwind family of instruments. The clarinet has a single-reed mouthpiece, a straight cylindrical tube and a flaring bell. The clarinet is one of the most popular instruments in the band or orchestra. It has a beautiful mellow tone and often plays both harmony or melody.

When renting or buying a clarinet, it might seem that almost any clarinet will work for a beginner, but that is not always true. It’s very important to start with a high quality instrument, as the first few months are often the most difficult and critical for any beginner. An instrument that won't play properly will be a huge discouragement and source of frustration.

This does not mean that a beginner needs the finest or most expensive clarinet, but they do need one that responds freely, plays the correct notes when the right keys are pressed, plays in tune with the other instruments in the band, and can be repaired and adjusted as needed.

Typically, a beginner will use a plastic or hard rubber clarinet. A more advanced clarinet will be made of Grenadilla wood. This will have a better tone but requires more care from the student and isn’t recommended for outside use.

Shuff’s Music carries student, intermediate and professional clarinets of high quality brands like Buffet, Selmer, Leblanc, Jupiter, and others.
