The flute is a member of the woodwind family of instruments. Unlike woodwind instruments with a reed, the flute is an aerophone, a reedless wind instrument which produces a sound from the air flowing across an opening. The flute is one of the most popular instruments in the band or orchestra. It has a beautiful, mellow tone and often plays the melody.

When buying or renting a flute, keep in mind that not just any flute will work. The first few months are often the most difficult and critical for any beginner. A flute that does not play properly will become a huge discouragement and source of frustration for any student.

This doesn't mean that you need the finest or most expensive flute, but you do need a flute that responds freely, plays the correct notes when the right keys are pressed, plays in tune with the other instruments in the band, and can be repaired and adjusted as needed.

Typically, a beginner will use a silver plated, closed hole flute. A more advanced flute has several features that will improve the tone of the instrument. This advanced flute will most likely have a sterling-silver headjoint, be open holed, and have one extra, lower note (Low B).

Shuff’s Music carries many student, intermediate, and professional flutes by high quality brands like Jupiter, Azumi, Sonare by Powell, Amadeus, Armstrong, and others.
